The hydraulic cylinder on the shop press I built has been leaking for quite a while. The leak has been getting progressively worse.
Time to rebuild the hydraulic cylinder. It was a used cylinder when I built the press 15 years ago. The ID tag on the cylinder shows a manufacture date of 1963.
Upon disassembly, one of the studs was found to have damaged threads.
The metal was built up by welding the threaded portion of the stud. The stud was then turned down on the lathe to the proper diameter, then threaded. An 1-1/8″-12tpi tap cleaned up the female threads.
With new seals and paint, it’s ready for another 50 years.

Broaching is a machining process that uses a toothed tool, called a broach, to remove material. Broaching is used when precision machining is required, especially for odd shapes. Commonly machined surfaces include circular and non-circular holes, splines, keyways, and flat surfaces. Typical workpieces include small to medium-sized castings, forgings, screw machine parts, and stampings.
MFR Industries provides experienced, reliable broaching services for a wide variety of applications. Please contact us today for more information about our broaching services.
