The hydraulic cylinder on the shop press I built has been leaking for quite a while. The leak had been getting progressively worse.

Time to rebuild the hydraulic cylinder. It was a used cylinder when I built the press 15 years ago. The ID tag on the cylinder shows a manufacture date of 1963. Upon disassembly, one of the studs was found to have damaged threads. The metal was built up by welding the threaded portion of the stud. The stud was then turned down on the lathe to the proper diameter, then threaded. A 1-1/8″-12tpi tap cleaned up the female threads. With new seals and paint, it’s ready for another 50 years.
